App Cloning

App Cloning

App cloning is the practice of copying a legitimate app’s branding, interface or functionality to publish a lookalike app, typically to deceive users into installing malware, handing over credentials, or paying for a fake service.

Why it matters

App stores rank heavily on name and icon similarity, so a cloned app can surface in search results right next to the genuine one, especially before the real app has strong brand recognition. Users who install a clone often can’t tell the difference until it asks for excessive permissions, serves intrusive ads, or requests payment details the real app never would.

Vs. a rogue app

App cloning is a mechanism — copying an existing app’s identity. A rogue app is the broader category: any unauthorised app trading on a brand’s name, whether it’s a direct clone, a fake “companion” app, or something built from scratch that simply claims an affiliation it doesn’t have. Every clone is a rogue app; not every rogue app is a clone.

How detection works

  • Scan app store listings for name, icon and screenshot similarity to the brand’s official app
  • Check developer account details against the brand’s verified publisher identity
  • Flag apps requesting permissions inconsistent with their stated function, a common clone tell
  • Monitor both official stores (Google Play, Apple App Store) and third-party APK repositories, since clones frequently appear off-store first

How Truviss helps

Truviss’s App scanner continuously monitors app stores and third-party repositories for listings cloning a brand’s name, icon or interface, flagging them for takedown before they accumulate installs.

How can a user tell a cloned app from the real one before installing?▼

Check the developer name against the brand’s official, verified publisher account rather than the app name or icon alone, since both are easy to copy. A low install count or recent publish date on an app claiming to be an established brand is also a strong warning sign.

Does Truviss treat app cloning as its own case type or under rogue apps?▼

Under rogue apps generally, since the takedown process (reporting to the store, providing brand ownership evidence) is the same regardless of whether the app is a direct clone or a different kind of unauthorised app.
