Seller Verification

Seller verification is the process of confirming a marketplace seller’s identity, business legitimacy and authorisation to sell a given brand’s products, used as a detection signal to separate genuine sellers from those running counterfeit or unauthorised listings.

Why it matters

A seller with no verifiable business history, a newly created account, or no traceable registration is one of the strongest early signals that a listing deserves scrutiny — often more reliable than the listing content itself, since images and descriptions are easy to copy from a genuine product page. Seller-level checks catch problem accounts before they list a single item, not just after a bad listing is already live.

Online vs. offline verification

Online: marketplaces verify sellers through account registration checks, tax/business ID validation, and ongoing account-health monitoring (order defect rates, complaint volume). A brand layers its own check on top by cross-referencing seller accounts against its authorised distributor and reseller list.

Offline: for physical retail and distribution partners, verification means confirming business registration, a real trading address, and a signed distribution agreement before goods are supplied — the same due diligence a brand would run before onboarding any wholesale partner, since offline diversion into unauthorised retail or export channels feeds the same grey-market and counterfeit problems seen online.

How detection works

  • Cross-reference marketplace seller accounts against a brand’s authorised distributor/reseller list
  • Flag new or unverified accounts selling high volumes of a single brand’s products immediately after registration
  • Track seller account history across marketplaces, since a seller banned on one platform will often reappear on another under a new name
  • Combine seller signals with pricing and image checks, per fake product listings, rather than relying on any single signal

How Truviss helps

Truviss’s Marketplace scanner checks seller identity and history as one of its core detection signals, flagging accounts outside a brand’s authorised network alongside the pricing and image checks that make up the rest of the detection pipeline.

Can seller verification alone confirm a listing is genuine?

No. A verified, legitimate-looking seller account can still list counterfeit or unauthorised stock, particularly if the account was compromised or is deliberately built up with genuine sales history before switching to fraudulent listings. It’s one signal among several, not a standalone guarantee.

Does seller verification apply to offline distribution too?

Yes. The same underlying question, is this party actually authorised to sell this brand’s products, applies whether the channel is a marketplace account or a physical wholesale distributor; offline diversion is a common source of the grey-market goods that later show up online.
